sony receiver subwoofer not working

I can barely hear it doing a little something with the rock concert on TV (HD) when I put my ear to the grill cover and have it turned up all the way. The receiver shows that it is indeed sending a tone to the sub for me to hear, but I'm getting nothing. Image and sound are not output from the TV when the receiver is not turned on.
